CERAMIC WORKS
INSPIRED BY NATURAL LANDSCAPE & LAPIS LAZULI
My ceramic historical study is also about cultural hybridity based on the Silk Road. Different cultures met on that ‘Road’. During my studies, the ceramic collection in V&A formed part of my inspiration. The blue and white ceramics in the Islamic gallery led me to research how Chinese blue and white ceramics connect with Islamic ceramics. I examined how blue colours and patterns from these cultures influenced each other while maintaining their distinct similarities and differences. I also focussed on how the blue-coloured rock Lapis Lazuli played an important role in eastern and western art, adapting this blue into my ceramic colour practice.

Textural Landscape
I have always been interested in depicting landscapes with Chinese traditional elements and styles. In my previous landscape paintings and moving image works, I inverted black and white colour from traditional ink landscape painting and developed them into moving images. My current ceramic work is also about landscape but uses Chinese ancient characters – Oracle script font. It is the origin of Chinese writing. I wish to introduce this ancient font to young children of different backgrounds, to help them understand Chinese culture better. From these Chinese Oracle script fonts, which are literally a smart quick sketch of the subject, people can guess the meaning of the character directly from the shape of it. So, I use some characters: ‘mountain, valley, water’ to create ‘Textual Landscapes’. The shape of my ceramic series is also inspired from the shape of the changing landscape. These ceramics imagine mountains, valleys, waters, steppes, and deserts. They all connect to each other to form a continuous fluctuating and curving landscape shape.

Exploring the idea of people's homes as their 'private caves' in which they can find refuge and place to hide from the outside world. Windows function as evasive voyeuristic portals between the city and these private realms.
