TEXTURAL LANDSCAPE

Ceramic

I have always been interested in depicting landscapes with Chinese traditional elements and styles. In my previous landscape paintings and moving image works, I inverted black and white colour from traditional ink landscape painting and developed them into moving images. My current ceramic work is also about landscape but uses Chinese ancient characters – Oracle script font. It is the origin of Chinese writing. I wish to introduce this ancient font to young children of different backgrounds, to help them understand Chinese culture better. From these Chinese Oracle script fonts, which are literally a smart quick sketch of the subject, people can guess the meaning of the character directly from the shape of it. So, I use some characters: ‘mountain, valley, water’ to create ‘Textual Landscapes’. The shape of my ceramic series is also inspired from the shape of the  changing landscape. These ceramics imagine mountains, valleys, waters, steppes, and deserts. They all connect to each other to form a continuous fluctuating and curving landscape shape.
